Galle

A walled city of colonial charm

← Back to Destinations

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka's southern coast, first built by the Portuguese in 1588 and substantially fortified by the Dutch through the 17th century. It's one of the best-preserved examples of a European fortified city built by colonial powers in South Asia.

Inside the ramparts, cobblestone streets wind past colonial-era villas, boutique cafes, and art galleries, while the sea walls offer some of the best sunset views on the island.
